I’m passionate about spring bulbs. They’re not the poshest of flowers, but I couldn’t bear to live without them – especially daffodils. I’m addicted to miniature daffs, especially tete a tete, and at this time of year when everyone else gets all christmassy, I get all bulby!
I also love being out in the garden with the kids. So what better way to enjoy my two great loves than to plant spring bulbs with my children?
I’d definitely recommend writing with bulbs. Even tiny kids tend to recognise their own initials and it’s great fun to plant bulbs in the shape of the letters. Now coming into their third year are a smart ‘C’ and ‘A’ – representing the first letter of each of my kids’ names – gracing a bit of grass near the magnolia. We used just 10-15 bulbs per letter, and just let the kids get on with it. I had to help when their tiny wrists hit a course bit of grass, but otherwise they did a great job.
And despite having to wait until March to see the results, the golden ‘A’ and ‘C’ have met with grins of ownership and satisfaction every year!

I have a problem with Pheasants Eye Why nothing after 6 weeksin pots
I too love spring bulbs however we have so many problems with squirrels digging them up I have virtually given up with them. Any ideas on how I can stop the squirrels doing this
Toby covered this with tulips in one of the Gardener’s world programmes. He used those plastic baskets that are used in ponds. I thought of using chicken wire as a suitable alternative. Squirrels are apparently nice in a pie lol. Greys only
I do cover all my pots with chicken wire or hanging baskets turned upside down. I have to do this ,or replant every day.
